PRESTO BLACK SSB
Room Temperature Stainless Steel Blackener
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
PRESTO BLACK SSB is a versatile room temperature blackening solution for stainless-steel substrates. It can be brushed-on, sprayed-on, wiped on, or used to make up an immersion bath.
All application methods react in approximately 1-3 minutes to produce a uniform, non-dimensional black finish on stainless-steel. During or after blackening, the surface may be highlighted with an abrasive pad to create a distressed or antiqued look for decorative or architectural metal work. The finish should be sealed with a clear coat or protective oil suitable for the final purpose.

BLACKENING PROCEDURES
- CLEAN the metal Use warm soapy water, an alkaline soak cleaner (Safe Scrub ST), or a solvent that does not leave a residue (alcohol, acetone; not mineral spirits or kerosene).
- REMOVE OXIDES, if necessary, by bead blasting or use other abrasive cleaning methods, such as buffing with Scotchbrite abrasive pads. Most stainless steels have significantly improved adhesion with mechanical abrasion pretreatment.
- APPLY PRESTO BLACK SSB solution to the metal
- Brush, swab, or spray: apply Presto Black SSB to entire surface to be blackened. Use a light flooding technique and continue applying fresh chemical to “replenish” the supply of chemicals reacting with the Allow the blackening reaction to continue until a uniform grey/black is achieved. If desired, burnish the surface with an abrasive pad to highlight areas or to make a brushed look. Stop the reaction by rinsing with water or by sponging the surface with water.
- Immersion: In an acid-proof container large enough to fully submerge the part, make a solution of 50-100% Presto Black SSB in water. 50% will produce greys and 100% will produce grey-blacks. Completely submerge part in bath and let react for 1-3 minutes or until parts have a uniform color. If desired, burnish the surface with an abrasive pad to highlight areas or make a brushed look.
- RINSE THROUGHLY. Use plenty of water to flush all residual chemical from the part. Insufficient rinsing will lead to rust or discoloration of the A solution of 3 Tablespoons baking soda in 1 gallon of water can be used to neutralize residue in hard-to-reach spaces. Perform a final rinse with fresh water.
- Inspect the coating and repeat steps 3-4 if
- Dry the part using compressed air or a lint-free Some rub-off may occur. Check the coating quality and reapply if necessary.
- Seal part in oil or a clear coat for protection and to make a darker
