Eugene F. Fairbanks
Eugene F. Fairbanks, the second son of Maude and Avard T. Fairbanks, was born in 1921 in Eugene, Oregon, while sculptor Fairbanks was teaching art at the University of Oregon. During an appointment to the faculty of the University of Michigan, 1930-48, his sons often helped at the studio, assisting with modeling and plaster casting.
Eugene chose to study medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School, graduating in 1945. He interned at Wayne County General Hospital near Detroit, Michigan. After his internship, he served in the Army Medical Corps as a transport surgeon on a troop transport ship. Following military service, he practiced medicine as a family physician in Pasco and Kennewick, Washington. After an anesthesiology residency in Seattle, in 1959, he moved to Bellingham, Washington, and practiced anesthesiology, then again as a family physician. He became a diplomat of both the American Board of Anesthesiology and the American Board of Family Physicians.
Avard T. Fairbanks
Avard T. Fairbanks, Ph.D. (1897-1987) was America's distinguished sculptor, anatomist, and educator of the 20th Century. In his career, he created more than 100 public monuments to great characters and events in history. (Four are found in the U.S. Capitol Bldg. in Washington, D.C.) He studied in New York, Paris, and Italy, and he attained his Doctorate in Anatomy at the University of Michigan where he was also Professor of Sculpture. He served on the faculties of five American universities and he was the founding Dean of the College of Fine Arts at the University of Utah (his native state). He was a descendent of Utah Pioneers (1847) and colonial Massachusetts settlers (1636).
