Sculpting the Female Figure/Torso in Clay
Six Sessions Taught by Penko Platikanov
Mondays from 6:00-9:00pm: February 3, 10, 17, 24, March 3 & 10
This course delves into the art and techniques of portraying the female figure while creating gesture, anatomy, and proportions. Students will explore the intricacies of sculpting in clay while emphasizing the grace, beauty, and form of the human body. Through a combination of theory, hands-on practice, and critical analysis, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of both the artistic principles and technical skills involved in crafting sculptures.
Final pieces will be from 16” to 20” tall. Students can choose between focusing on sculpting the torso or the full figure. There will be a live model.
Every step of the process will be demonstrated and guided. The small class structure will enables one-on-one attention as well as group teaching. The course will cover:
1. Introduction to the history, styles, and representations of the human figure throughout art history.
2. Examination of the anatomical structure of the human body, including proportions, muscle groups, and skeletal features essential for realistic depiction in figurative sculpture.
3. Exploring principles and aesthetic specifics to figurative sculptures. Emphasis on creating visually compelling compositions of the female figure/torso.
4. Introduction to the tools and materials essential for clay sculpting, including various types of plasticine, carving tools, and techniques for achieving texture and depth.
5. Hands-on sessions to learn modeling, shaping, and texturizing techniques for creating depth and dimension in the human figure in a studio format.
6. Applying learned techniques; experimenting with different styles, poses, and expressions of the female body.
7. Constructive critique throughout the process to evaluate and analyze student work, encouraging discussions on artistic choices, technical skills, and conceptual approaches.
