Availability: In stock (1)

This informative catalogue, signed by the artist, has gorgeous color photos of the *lacquerware work of Nagatoshi Onishi (born 1933). Onishi is a Japanese lacquer artist known for his unique method of producing lacquerware (urushi) and his dramatic, contemporary shapes.

He is a veritable institution in Japan and is world-famous as an artist in lacquer, a teacher and a scholar in the field. In 2000, he became a professor emeritus of Tokyo University of the Arts.

This softcover catalogue, published in 1999, accompanied an art exhibit at the **Mingei International Museum in San Diego, CA, September 24, 1999-January 9, 2000. Mingei is my favorite San Diego museum where I am a volunteer docent and enjoy touring visitors around the exhibitions at the museum.

It measures approx. 12 x 8 1/2" (30.5x21.5cm). It has 88 pages, and gorgeous color photos. It includes an introduction, an article about lacquer art, and an interview with Onishi and Tojogiro Hida, the curator of the Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art. It is in excellent vintage condition - no rips or tears. It's a wonderful pictorial reference book.
