STONE CARVING-A SKILL BASED APPROACH

Compleat Sculptor is excited to collaborate with Pellettieri Stone Carvers' Academy (www.stonecarversacademy.org) to present a weekly class based on the traditional apprenticeship model. Stone carving skills are introduced in a sequential manner throughout the month. Each new skill is taught and practiced through a short assigned project. INCLUDES OPEN STUDIO TIME!*

Virtues of this approach:

• It allows students to focus on the challenge of learning how to use the tools with control through low-stakes projects.
• Success can be measured objectively. 
• Learning through the creation of a work of art introduces a whole host of other challenges (composition, anatomy etc) as well as a level of attachment to the sculpture which hinders the experimental risk taking attitude that is such an asset when learning a new skill.

 

As you might guess, this class is designed for beginners, but even experienced carvers will benefit.

This course will be presented on Tuesdays (5-8pm) with students enrolling on a monthly basis and progressing through the sequence at their own pace. Eventually, they will design original sculptures in consultation with the teacher after completing the four assigned projects. New students can join and start from the beginning at any time. 

The stone being used will be limestone and each student must buy a block that will be used for all essential projects. The basic tools are provided.

 

Class is Tuesdays 5-8pm  at 110 W 19th St

Includes Studio Time on Tuesdays 11:00am-5:00pm & Wednesdays 10:30am-12:00pm & Thursdays 11:00am-5:00pm
